THE Marikina City Government has assigned two dump trucks exclusively for food waste collection in an effort to decrease the volume of solid wastes brought to the sanitary landfills. The project, an initiative of the City Environmental Management Office (CEMO), aims to convert waste from food establishment into other organic products and lessen the volume of waste being produced by the city. The waste materials are brought to the composting section of the city’s materials recovery facility. This is where the waste is processed and turned into compost, a component in making organic fertilizer. Mayor Del De Guzman said he is encouraging all food establishment owners and managers to participate in the project and help in maintaining a tidy and innovative city. The mayor added that the compost fertilizer can be bought at the CEMO at P15 per pack. Marikina is considered one of the cleanest cities in the Philippines.
