After a week of sports event hosted by the Philippines at the City of Marikina, the ASEAN Schools Games (ASG) capped off Friday evening together with the announcement of next year’s host.
Held inside the gymnasium of Marikina Sports Complex, student athletes from 7 participating ASEAN countries including Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei, Vietnam, Thailand, and the Philippines graced the closing ceremonies as proud representatives of their respective countries.
Next year, another batch of student-athletes will once again compete in various sports as the 7th ASG will be hosted by Brunei.
“Over the years, the ASG has been engaged in bringing together student-athletes of various countries in ASEAN for a competitive story to tell,” Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Commissioner Jose Luis Gomez said during the event.
Meanwhile, the Department of Education (DepEd) Undersecretary Rizalino Rivera underscored the resiliency of country’s athletes’ in spite of the aftermath of supertyphoon Yolanda and the onset of typhoon “Ruby” (international name: Hagupit) as the Philippines braces for another storm to hit the country. He said that sports in relation to challenges we encounter in life “teaches us wisdom.”
Aside from sportsmanship, participating countries also showed their skills in sports as they vied for gold, silver and bronze medals. Malaysia garnered the most number of wins with 105 medals (41 gold, 34 silver and 30 bronze). Following Malaysia’s feat is Thailand with 100 medals (35 gold, 29 silver and 36 bronze). Third place is Indonesia with 76 medals (15 gold, 31 silver and 30 bronze).
The Philippines came up at 4th place with 47 wins (11 gold, 14 silver, and 22 bronze).
Eleven sports events including athletics, badminton, basketball, golf, gymnastics, sepak takraw, swimming, tennis, table tennis, wushu and volleyball were participated by a total of 1,500 student-athletes. PNA
