CATBALOGAN CITY: The city government has identified 14 safe evacuation centers for families in makeshift houses and coastal communities.
Records from the city disaster risk reduction and management office showed that the local government designated schools and churches as safe evacuation centers for different villages.
The evacuation centers are Samar National School for seven villages in the city center, as well as Darahuway Daco, Darahuway Gote, Pangdan and Bunuanan.
Catbalogan II Central School for barangays (villages) 8 and 9, and Guinsorongan. Residents of Ibol village can take temporary shelter at the Eastern Visayas Regional Science High School.
Mercedes village has two evacuation centers – the Samar State University (SSU) Mercedes Campus and Mercedes chapel.
The Maulong Elementary School was listed as an evacuation center for residents nearby.
Families from the villages of Silanga, Iguid, San Vicente, San Roque, Estaka, and Cabugawan were asked to take shelter at Silanga National High School and Silanga Elementary School.
Dwellers in Payao and Pupua villages will have to move to a nearby chapel and New Life Christian Center, while residents in three villages of the city center are advised to evacuate to San Bartolome Church.
The Pupua Elementary School can also serve as shelter for families living near the school. The New Mahayag Elementary School has opened its doors for evacuees of New Mahayag, Old Mahayag, and San Vicente.
Residents of Lagundi Elementary School were told to take shelter in a village hall.
The city government also alerted village officials, day care workers, and teachers to be ready for the typhoon.
The city social welfare office had already prepared food packs for distribution to typhoon victims of the city starting Friday afternoon prioritizing those that are living in island barangays.
City Mayor Stephanie Uy-Tan, in a joint-meeting with businessmen, asked store owners to keep the suggested retail price.
Strength of law enforcement personnel and the available equipments for emergency use were identified.
Classes in all level in this city are already suspended after the lady mayor issued an executive order on Wednesday, declaring suspension of classes in anticipation of super typhoon “Ruby.” PNA
