DAVAO CITY: Former President Fidel V. Ramos Thursday challenged delegates to the 2nd BIMP-Eaga and IMT-GT Trade Fair and Business Leaders’ Conference in Davao City to ensure a strengthened security and political environment as they prepare for the Asean economic integration in 2015.
Bimp-Eaga refers to the sub-regional economic bloc of Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines-East Asean Growth Area, while the IMT-GT stands for Indonesia Malaysia Thailand Growth Triangle.
Ramos, who is considered as the father of the Bimp-Eaga, said that the issue of security and political stability are the more difficult challenges facing the Asean community.
“We should work on this together,” said Ramos in his keynote address. At least 250 exhibitors and 1,000 investors and business players gathered in Davao City for the forum.
Sec. Luwalhati Antonino, chairperson of the Mindanao Development Authority, described the forum as a “historic event.”
“Your presence signifies your commitment to our goal of solidifying the convergence of two formidable sub-regional groupings, in our bid to strengthen our position as vital players in the coming (Asean) integration,” said Antonino. JEFRY M. TUPAS
