Veteran tanker Martin Jacob Pupos set a new short course junior national record in men’s 200-meter freestyle and four league records during the Philippine Swimming League (PSL)-Magnolia 65th Leg Series Elite Swim Meet at the Diliman Preparatory School (DPS) swimming pool in Quezon City on August 31, 2014.
Pupos, a member of Elite Swimming Team and sponsored athlete of TYR recreational and competitive swimwear, topped the boys’ 15 years 100-meter butterfly (1:00.78) and 200m freestyle (2:00.98) in record fashion.
Pupos started the competition in the 200m individual medley where he won the event by five seconds faster than his best time and a full second-and-a-half from the old record. He later on continued to smash the previous records in the 200m freestyle, 100m butterfly and 100m breaststroke.
He also broke the record in the 100m backstroke, set by Jeffrey Michael Hirao earlier this year, but only finished in the third spot. Nathan Cheng, straight from Baguio City, won the event while fellow teammate Carl Bormate took the second spot losing by only a half second to Cheng.
The PSL is under the leadership of veteran swimmer and coach Susan Papa.
Pupos, who trains under Coach Mando Yumul at The Village Sports Club in Parañaque City, won seven medals overall and was awarded as the Most Outstanding Swimmer (MOS) in his age group.
Earlier this year, he won six gold medals and a bronze at the 2014 Indian Ocean All Star Swim Challenge held in Perth, Australia. He also won two gold medals during the 10th Singapore Island Country Club (SICC) Swimming Championships held on August 2 to 3, 2014.
He hopes to be part of the national team who will be competing in the Southeast Asian Games next year.
